Tech Deck Live | Battleground

For a couple years, in between working for LEGO and going back to work for LEGO some more, I got pulled over to Spin Master by one of my old bosses at LEGO. For the first few months, the entire art department of the fledgling new "Spin Master Studios" division consisted solely of me, and though we were able to gradually bring in a full team of artists over the next two years, we never seemed to hire them fast enough to keep up with the amount of work. I pulled more all-nighters at Spin Master than I had even in art school, until we were finally able to pick up Mark Pajarillo towards the end of my tenure to take the administrative and pipeline duties off my plate.

(I don't know how many people get to spearhead the recruiting and interview process for hiring their own boss, but it was a funny experience.)

Tech Deck Live was Spin Master Studio's first major project - a low-poly in-browser kids' MMO based on Spin Master's line of Tech Deck finger skateboards. Starting from doing the work of the whole art department by myself, I had the job of ramping up the art team and pipeline for full production over the course of two years.

Along with heading up the SMS art department, I got to fit in a couple of support projects for the toy lines from time to time, including Bakugan, Swypeout, and Air Hogs. But my favorite work was for Battleground: Crossbows and Catapults, one of my favorite games as a kid, re-released by Spin Master in 2007.
